For her theatrical adaptation of the 19th-century poetry cycle Haugtussa, Norwegian-Dutch theater director Eline Arbo wants to create a dark and mysterious world never before seen on stage. In her eyes, the ominous themes in this mythical tale about a woman seeking refuge in nature are profoundly contemporary.

Between scenes of magic and trolls, Arbo reflects on her role as a socially engaged theatre director. On her home ground well above the Arctic Circle, she reconnects with her teenage spirit: ‘I was so bold, eager, and full of fun – I often think back on those days.’ Now, she examines herself in the mirror and sees how her plays reflect her personality and her personal struggle against the injustices that surround her.

In The Storm Within reflecteert Arbo op haar rol als vooraanstaand theaterregisseur en repeteert ze voor het nieuwe toneelstuk Haugtussa, gebaseerd op een Noorse gedichtencyclus waarin een jonge vrouw met magische krachten haar toevlucht zoekt in de natuur. Met een duistere en mysterieuze theaterbewerking wil Arbo een nooit eerder op het podium vertoonde wereld scheppen. In haar ogen zijn de onheilspellende mythische taferelen uit het negentiende-eeuwse Haugtussa bij uitstek hedendaags.

Op haar geboortegrond even boven de poolcirkel haalt de Noors-Nederlandse theaterregisseur Eline Arbo haar teenage spirit terug: ‘ik had zoveel schijt, zin en lol – daar denk ik vaak aan terug’. Vandaag de dag voelt ze zich een vechter die de bevreemdende en onrechtvaardige wereld om zich heen uit alle macht probeert om te buigen.
